Review of Owlet: Society of Feathers #1 by Emma Michaels

Description:

 Owlet: Society of Feathers #1

Somewhere between falling and flying… there is a girl.

Iris has a secret. She lost her memory eight years ago and never told a living soul. After an asthma attack one night she finds out that her dreams of a strange house on a snowy island may be a memory resurfacing but the more she learns about the past the more she realizes the life she has been living is a lie. As the façade her father has built starts to crumble around her she will have to decide which means more to her; the truth or her life.

Review:

I received this book for review and it has such an awesome cover!!  I was instantly in love with what I hoped it would be.  It looked like such a cool concept.
The idea of Iris and Falcon's situation was so romantic and I loved their dynamic.  Falcon had such a great character and I loved the way his story unfolded as the book progressed.  Iris on the other hand, I just couldn't connect with.
There wasn't enough information that made any sense at the beginning of the book.  The story started out slow and confusing.  I'm glad I stuck with it, it picked up in the second half and set up the sequel nicely.
It took until that second half for the book to really take flight:)  Once the action picked up, the author did a great job on bringing the information in like pieces of a puzzle coming together.  Now that the action has finally been built up, this series has great potential.
I am looking forward to seeing how it all turns out in the sequel and recommend this to all YA audiences.  There was nothing in the book that made it uncomfortable or graphic.  It was tame and interesting for all ages.  I have to give this story three stars for the second half of the book being super interesting.

Excerpt:

Iris had opened her eyes but it hadn’t made a difference for her emotional state. She was still panicking, crying and breathing hard. She looked around at Falcon and Diana who tried to stop themselves from reacting. Her eyes were a deep orange, almost auburn at the rims, and as it worked its way to the iris it got lighter and more vivid.

Hearing the front door open and close, Diana quickly got up and ran out of the room to warn Roger that it was happening. She wasn’t sure what might occur if they made Iris panic, or what the Owlet might have taught her.

Iris tried to sit up but her body was still adjusting. Before she could tip over, Falcon grabbed her shoulders and steadied her, helping her prop herself up against the headboard. She seemed to be trying to keep it together but when the door opened and she saw her father’s face, the walls she had been building up around her emotions broke, everything coming out at once as she started to cry once again.

Roger ran and put his arms around her. Diana was coming back to the room when Roger called to her, “Diana, do as I asked and call Jarem.”

“They were following you?”
